Independent investigation of damp and moisture problems

Types of damp and moisture problems
Penetrating damp

Penetrating damp occurs where moisture passes through the external building envelope. Common causes include defective roof coverings, failed flashings, cracked render, open pointing, leaking gutters and poorly sealed windows.

Condensation and mould

Condensation occurs when moisture-laden air meets a cold surface. It is commonly associated with poor ventilation, inadequate heating, thermal bridging, overcrowding or high levels of internal moisture production.

Plumbing leaks

Damp survey versus free damp-proofing survey
Some damp-proofing companies offer free inspections. These may be useful for obtaining a quotation, but the inspecting company may also be selling the recommended treatment.
